Meeting of District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) held under the Chairmanship of the DC

A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) was under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, UT Chandigarh to discuss various road safety related issues. The meeting was attended by the SSP/Traffic & Security, representatives of UT Engineering Department, Municipal Corporation/Chandigarh, Architect Department, Urban Town Planning Department/UT, CTU, Health Department, Harman Sidhu, ArriveSafe NGO, all DSsP/Traffic and Road Safety Experts of Chandigarh Road Safety Society (CRSS) among others.

The action taken on the agenda points of the last meeting held was presented to the Committee which includes installation of Traffic Police Assistance Booths, improvement of existing Mid-Block pedestrian crossing for the safety of the pedestrians across the city, earmarking of Pick and Drop Points for Auto Rickshaws on Madhya Marg on a pilot basis, provision of extreme Left lane for buses/trucks (commercial/passengers) on the city roads, physical segregation of cycle tracks marked on main carriageway roads on Purv Marg from Transport Light to Tribune Chowk, provision of spring post at the entry/exit of slip roads for provision of obstruction free left movement and to avoid collusion at the exit of the slip roads on junctions at Madhya Marg as pilot project, installation of strong iron grills at the broken/missing locations on major road carriageways to avoid criss- crossing of road by the pedestrians, provision of Jersey Barrier at the roads having congested market & residential area and provision of medians on sectors V-5 roads entry/exit from V-4 road and non-functioning of street lights in the city.

Apart from the above, keeping in view of the Foggy Condition, it was decided that the engineering measures to be taken during Foggy Season will be taken up separately with the Engineering Department and the road users are advised to take the following safety tips while driving for their own safety as well as for the safety of the other road users during Fog:-

  • If possible avoid travel during Fog
  • Drive in low-head light beam with hazard blinkers on
  • Maintain adequate and safe distance from the vehicle ahead
  • Don’t Park your vehicle on road side
  • Drive Slow
  • Avoid Lane jumping
  • Use reflective tape
  • Watch out for cyclists and pedestrians

The timelines of the ibid engineering works have been discussed in the meeting and they have been asked to complete the ibid works related to road safety in stipulated time period on priority basis for the safety of the road users.
