Mohali Municipal Corporation announces to dedicate Silvi Park to Shiromani Punjabi writer Santokh Singh Dhir

The Voice of Chandigarh News: Mohali Municipal Corporation has announced to dedicate the Silvi Park, biggest one located in Phase-10 of Mohali to late Mr. Santokh Singh Dhir, a versatile and celebrated Punjabi writer who contributed more than fifty books to Punjabi literature.   

This historic initiative is being lauded not only by the tricity’s Literary circles but also whole of Punjab and Punjabi lovers abroad. This has been possible due to the sincere efforts of Amarjit Singh Sidhu, Mayor and Amrik Singh Somal, Senior Deputy Mayor, Kuljit Singh Bedi, Deputy Mayor and all the councillors of  Municipal Corporation Mohali who passed the resolution unanimously.

It is worth mentioning that Shiromani Punjabi writer Mr. Santokh Singh Dhir, who was awarded with National Sahitya Akademi honor in 1996 for his story collection ‘Pakhi’, was also a lifetime fellow of Punjabi University, Patiala. Born on December 2, 1920 at Bassi Pathana, Santokh Singh Dhir’s famous works were translated into other languages. His epic stories namely Koi Ek Swar, Pakhi, Mango and Ek Sadharan Aadmi have been adapted into telefilms by Doordarshan Jalandhar. Mr. Dhir is also the author of classic poem ‘Nikki Sleti Sarak Da Totta‘ depicting his noble ideas of world peace. A Mohali based theatre group, Sarghi Kala Kendra, has adapted and staged Mr. Dhir’s popular stories, such as, Dain, Mera Ujjarya Gwandi, Saanjhi Kandh, Swer hon tak, Bhet Wali Gal, Koi Ik Swaar.  

It is worth mentioning that after the demise of Dhir Sahib on February 8, 2010, his body was donated to PGIMER, Chandigarh for the benevolent purpose of medical research. Mr. Dhir spent the last four decades of his active literary life in Kothi no. 689, Phase-10, Mohali adjacent to Silvi Park which will now be named after him.
